- About the venue
- The Basement is a 100 capacity events venue situated below City Screen Picturehouse cinema, right in the heart of York city centre. The venue hosts an eclectic mix of events including live music, poetry, comedy, drama and DJ nights and has done since March 2000; read a full history of the venue. Its low ceiling and side on layout make the venue incredibly intimate with the crowds rarely more than ten metres away from the acts. Although not exactly what you expect from a venue, The Basement has a character all of it’s own.
- Opening Hours
- Unless otherwise stated The Basement operates from 8pm until 11pm for the majority of events and 7pm until 10pm for Hyena Lounge Comedy Club events on Sundays. However, occasionally some events may start earlier or finish later than these times so please check the individual event pages prior to the event. City Screen is open from 11am every day, except Wednesday and Sunday, when it opens at 10:30am. During the daytime The Basement Internet Café is in operation.
- How to get Tickets
- Tickets can be bought from any till in City Screen during the opening hours of the cinema. For telephone bookings please call 0871 902 5726 or to book online please follow the link on the individual event page.
- Age Policy
- The Basement is a 16+ venue. This means that ID may be checked and admission may be refused. However, if you want to attend an event and you are under the age of 16, please get in touch with The Basement's management before travelling to the event (via 01904 612940 or cityscreenyork.basement@picturehouses.co.uk), who may allow entry, if you come accompanied by a guardian aged 18 or over. Occasionally some events can be either 14+ (in which no alcohol is served or permitted in) or 18+. Please check the individual event page to check the age restriction of a particular night. Again, the same policy applies to those under these ages.

The Basement strictly enforces age restrictions on alcohol. We accept the following forms of ID:
- Passport
- Driving license
- PASS Scheme Card
- National ID Cards
- Disabled Access
- The Basement is fully accessible to all. If you have any special requirements please either let The Basement's management know in advance (via 01904 612940 or cityscreenyork.basement@picturehouses.co.uk) or inform the staff on the door or on the main box office on the night who will be happy to help.
- How to Get a Gig
- The Basement works exclusively on a hire basis so if you're in a band (or you're a poet, comedian, solo artist or anyone else looking for an audience) then you need to get in touch with our regular promoters.
