When Mark Knopfler was putting together his Notting Hillbillies in the 90s, his first choice for guitarist was his longtime friend and compatriot Steve Phillips. The reason for this is clear for anyone who sees Steve Phillips live. Trevor Hodgett reckons he is "one of the greatest acoustic blues guitarists Europe has ever produced and is currently one of the finest anywhere in the world."
