YPS Cafe Scientifique

The YPS (Yorkshire Philosophical Society) is pleased to support the ongoing activities of Cafe Scientifique in York

Café Scientifique is a place where, a cup of coffee or a glass of wine in your hand, you can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. Meetings take place in cafes, bars, restaurants and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context.

The first Cafés Scientifiques in the UK were held in Leeds in 1998. From there, cafes gradually spread across the country. Currently, some forty or so cafes meet regularly to hear scientists or writers on science talk about their work and discuss it with diverse audiences.

Renee van de Locht (MSc), who is a PhD student working on biomineralisation and coral studies in the Department of Physics at The University of York. Renee will be talking about her MSc project, which she undertook in the Netherlands. The title and details for her presentation are as follows:

'You Are What You Eat...?' - Isotope Research in Archaeology

Paleo-diet reconstruction and provenancing of a Medieval population in Vlaardingen, the Netherlands

Renee van de Locht (MSc), Department of Physics, The University of York

41 human skeletons were excavated from the central market square in Vlaardingen dating from 11th century AD. Both skeletal features, burial methods and materials raised questions about the history and provenance of the people that lived and died at the time of the important Battle of Vlaardingen in 1018 AD.
